Representatives from local communities, civil society organisations, and academia at an international conference on Wednesday called for ensuring equitable access to land for poor and marginalised people to address climate-related challenges.

They also said that the poor and marginalised people were often deprived of land ownership and face the risk of being evicted from their land. People with secure land tenure rights are more likely to make long-term investments in climate change adaptation measures, they added.

During the closing session of a two-day regional conference titled ‘Mainstreaming Land Rights in the Narrative of Climate Change: Views from the Ground,’ they also pointed out that the lack of land rights made poor and marginalised people extremely vulnerable to impacts of climate change, forcing them to settle in areas that are fragile and prone to disasters.

The Asian NGO Coalition for Agrarian Reform and Rural Development and the Association for Land Reform and Development organised the conference in collaboration with the Global Forum on Agricultural Research and Innovation, the Global Land Tool Network and UN- HABITAT and the Land Portal Foundation.
